Introduction

So I've been discussing resource type identities with a couple of scrolldiers, and I thought I'd try my hand at defining the four resource types of Scrolls, since it is paramount when it comes to the user (or developer) creation of new scrolls for Scrolls. I've taken a look at various TCG colour charts from other games and have found four categories that I think adequately helps define the resource types in Scrolls:

Unique Keywords: These are traits or mechanics that will only be found in this resource type.

Core Keywords: These traits or mechanics are key to the resource type's identity, but can also be found in the other resource types.

Mechanics: These are more generalized mechanics and playstyles that identify the resource type.

Mechanical Themes: These are the general feelings that the resource type evokes as a result of all of the game mechanics - separate from lore flavor.

Lore Flavor: This looks at the lore alone to give each resource type an overarching non-mechanical theme.

I've followed a couple of guidelines to determine what to include in each category. For Unique Keywords, anything that is unique will be included, even if the number of instances of the unique keywords are pretty rare (Like Inspiring). With Core Keywords, I've tried to only include keywords that are key to the resource type, and where a keyword is equally frequent/powerful in two resources (like Ward in Growth/Order) I've chosen to add it to both. When it comes to Mechanics, I've decided to try to give each resource type a mechanical identity that should stay more or less the same by focusing on general play style principles rather than specific strategies currently employed in the meta. Finally, these are essentially guidelines built based on observations of what the game is currently like. We can see an uneven distribution of unique keywords, and that's probably down to the fact that the overall card pool in scrolls is still relatively small. We might see some of these keywords spread to the other resource types in the future, and when the devs decides to do that - I shall update this guideline accordingly.

:growth Growth :growth

Unique Keywords: Haste, Flying, Inspiring, Regeneration

Core Keywords: Relentless, Pillage, Magic Armor, Ward

Mechanics: Summoning synergy or "Comes into play" effects, enchantment synergy, board-wide damage, token generation, Fast creatures, healing

Mechanical Themes: Speed, Horde, Aggression, Nature, Restoration

Lore Flavor: Ruthless, United, Feral

:order Order :order

Unique Keywords: Resonance

Core Keywords: Armor 2, Dominion, Relentless, Spiky, Ward, Magic armor

Mechanical Themes: Efficiency, Strategy, Action, Precision

Lore Flavor: Loyalty, Honor, Pride

:energy Energy :energy

Unique Keywords: Surge

Core Keywords: Ranged attack, Armor 1, Lobber, Pillage, Piercing

Nice write up of all the factions ;).

Anyway, my two cents on motto and characteristics :

:growth = "Unstoppable force of enchanted nature."
  • lots of weak but fast forest dwellers
  • speciality: mass attacks with creatures on steroids

:order = "Tactical army movements with individual brilliance."
  • human, medium melee, strong defence
  • speciality: manipulation of space & time

:energy = "Brutal power of the battlefield unleashed."
  • killer structures, light & heavy ranged and melee
  • speciality: instant removal, sudden attacks, and extremely slow death ...

:decay = "Strength from death."
  • slow, cheap, but strong creatures
  • speciality: death transformations & killer poisons

I've updated my post now by adding a lore flavor category to each resource type, and separating themes into "Mechanical themes" which are themes evoked by the game mechanics of each resource type.

Just for fun, I used this manner of defining a resource type with the Chaos resource type I've created:

Image Chaos Image

Unique Keywords: Blaze, Deplete

Core Keywords: Marks, Relentless, Ward, Ranged

Mechanics: Transformations, conditional Damage mitigation, Spell & enchantment synergistic, own Resource manipulation (Increase/Decrease), conditional unit removal.

Mechanical Themes: Chaos, Conditional, Trading, Delaying.

Lore Flavor: Discordance, Greed, Madness, Magic
