Date: Sun 24 Jun, 2012 7:03 PM Views: 2263
You heard it right! We've got a major treat for you, thanks again to Roger Karlsson and his friends-and-family build of Scrolls. What we've got today is almost 12 minutes of pure Scrolls gameplay, which covers a full match start to finish. He's up against a Medium-difficulty AI, and ... well, we know you're going to watch it, so see for yourself!

As we mentioned, there are a dozen previously-unrevealed scrolls for us to drool over.

Did you catch 'em all?

Here's the list of every scroll featured in the video, including the 12 new ones!

Spoiler: [show]

Looks pretty shit.

That was freaking fast in regards to wiki editing!!
Don't even know where to start discussing...
I liked the video, even though sound would have made it a lot better.
I was especially amazed how the game was turned around with those Lightning Surges. Wouldn't have expected that. (OMGNERFDATSURGE)

Now I see why the wolves are used so often. Haste makes the Ragged wolf attack right when he get's summoned onto the battlefield.
The Great Wolf packs a ton of damage when there are multiple wolves on your field, plus he has relentless. Combined with Brother of the wolf... so awesome.

Happy 400th post, selebu! :D You're now in a club consisting of me, you, and kbasten. =)

Those Thunder Surges are definitely OP. Koen made a good point: because the board size got reduced, there's a MUCH higher likely that scrolls will be connected (especially by the time you have the resources for TS). That definitely needs a nerf, perhaps where it does 3 damage on the target square, 2 to all directly adjacent, and 1 to units within two; ideally, they'd nerf it further than that, too. Perhaps balancing by keeping it an Uncommon / Rare scroll is a viable option.

Keep in mind that not all Ragged Wolves have Haste. As we can see in the video, there are multiple Great Wolves and some don't have Relentless. That should lead us to the conclusion that some scrolls have those extras while others (of the same type) do not. This could be a great way to make several versions of 1 card, with a varying 'extra' that can occasionally occur (giving some extra rarity, too). Even without Relentless, Great Wolves are impressive in that wolf centric deck.

Dang I didn't notice that. I find this quite interesting, even though it's uncommon.
Makes trading Scrolls more like trading Items in an MMORPG where there a varying stats. Interesting

and thanks for welcoming me to the club :S

Scrolls can have some random stats? Wow, cool!

I have to say the video is a big anti-climax. We have been waiting a long time for some real footage and the first thing we get to see is this bad quality video.

I must say the only thing I really missed was sound/music.
Other than that I'm pretty thrilled, cause it showed us so much about gameplay mechanics of specific scrolls.

Also did anyone notice that many times he sacrified one of the scrolls in his hand to draw two new ones?

Yeah, such a great feature. The problem of not having cards in end game has been solved.

I wanna know if its possible to cast this scroll on an opponents unit?

Seems like an awesome tactic to take out strong units if they are on the wrong spot.

The great wolf ability:

Great wolf gain 1+ Attack for every other wolf you control.

Relentless

Review:

I don't care about the video bad quality, but it gameplay is great.
LeLasSun 24 Jun, 2012 9:43 PM
So whats Relentless?

Nice suggestion for the Wiki: Ability section where we explain what Haste, Relentless etc. mean.

Nice comparison, I hadn't thought of it like that. I'm sure it won't be "random", really, there will probably only be one modifier it can sometimes have [or maybe two].

Why the :S face? :( I meant it, welcome! <3 You'll be passing me pretty soon, huh? :)

Wait, is that what that was? . . . :oFascinating, that's a very interesting way to handle the end-game. Very profound change to the game on this point.

LeLas wrote:

Whaaaa-?! This makes me really excited for Scrolls! Sure, the quality isn't the best, but it does exactly what it's supposed to: give us a taste of the action, and make us want to play it ourselves!

LeLas wrote:

A scroll doesn't 'waste' any of its attack; if it defeats a scroll, it keeps attacking if possible.

LeLas wrote:

Yeah, but we need another word for it; abilities are already what we call the card features.

Do we use: Extras, Modifiers, Features, Skills, Talents, etc.

I would vote for either Talents or Skills. :)

You sure that's what it means? I always thought that was the default behaviour of units, at least that's what Jakob mentioned in the early days of Scrolls. ;)

I was very amused with the gameplay I just saw! Could be a lot of fun. The amount of resource you get though is always max (right?), so if your turn starts you have x out of x resource.

Isn't that a little odd in comparison to other games. If it was a random number from 1 to x, then that lightning strike would be way less OP.

It seems like they're making progress, so who knows, we'll be playing this soon!
selebuSun 24 Jun, 2012 11:46 PM
@ShdwFlm
It was just because I didn't know what else to put there. And also I missed the D when trying to make a :D and just thought it fits

@kbasten
I'm with ShdwFlm here. Relentless means that a unit keeps attacking if it does more damage than the blocker has life. I'm sure you can see in the vid that only the great wolves do this. (Haven't checked it actually)

@Bartpj00ns
yeah you always start a turn with full resources. I'm not entirely sure why you think this is odd. Isn't it the same way for other TCGs as well?
Unless something changed over the last few years

Bart, you're back! :) I've been wondering how the rest of the guild has been lately.

*nod*

Also, here's what I believe Haste means for Scrolls: on the turn it's summoned, its countdown is reduced to 0 immediately and attacks. For each subsequent turn, its countdown lowers regularly. Does that seem right, given the video? It would line up with what's expected from other games.

- - -

Also, you know what I'm really liking about Scrolls? It looks like you can do anything at almost any time. A lot of other TCGs have a set order that you have to do things. For Scrolls, you can move a unit, sacrifice a scroll to raise your resources, and play your scrolls whenever. It's rather refreshing!

Totally with you about the first part of haste. That the counter is set to zero the turn the unit is spawned. Not entirely sure about the subsequent turns. Would have to watch the vid again and pay closer attention to the wolves.

About the other thing, I totally agree. I noticed it after a few turns that he sacrified resources whenever. It gives you much more freedom. For example before you decide whether you want to sacrifice a scroll as resource, you could play Sister of the Fox to draw another scroll. Maybe you then want to sacrifice this scroll or decide that you don't need more resources this turn etc etc. Or just after drawing a new scroll you decide that you need more resources to be able to play it this turn.
The only thing that is really set is when your units attack.

I also like this a lot.
The sad thing about this whole vid is that I want to play the game even more ;)

This looks amazing!! A little while ago I had posted on Roger's blog saying "can you please post a video? just one quick match? If you're allowed to of course...." (something along those lines) And a message poped up saying "your message will be verified", but I haven't seen my message on his blog yet. So long story short I may have done something to help us get this video. Now we have more stuff to talk about! :D
ROCKduhHOUSEMon 25 Jun, 2012 4:37 AM
I only saw Growth throughout the game. Is there only one resource or something? I also noticed that some turns he had more scrolls than others. Does the option next to sacrificing your card trade it in for 2 new ones or something?

This 12 minute video has given us a lot of extra info. I'm very glad they posted it.

kbasten & I discussed that earlier when first watching the video. What it essentially boils down to, from what I can gather, is that they don't really want to reveal much about the other resources yet. Focusing on showing us one resource allows us to (a) get a good sample of gameplay, without (b) taking the fun out of discovering the Alpha for ourselves.

Well growth could just be the deck of the medium level bot. And obviously Roger focuses on only one resource. Maybe that wolf deck is kind of op at the moment. Who knows. Could be what Shdw said, could be pure chance.

About the other thing. Yeah from what I saw it does exactly this. Put away one scroll receive two new ones
